Smyrna, Del. – U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, today visited Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge. Senator Blunt Rochester toured the grounds, viewed migratory birds, and met with staff to discuss their efforts to research and protect this natural landmark.

As the former Co-Chair of the Congressional Delaware River Watershed Caucus and a champion of the Delaware River Basin Conservation Reauthorization Act, Senator Blunt Rochester is dedicated to ensuring that Bombay Hook and other National Wildlife Refuges have the resources they need to properly conserve our natural habitat. Bombay Hook recently received $900,000 in federal grants for watershed conservation efforts.

“It was a privilege to tour Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge and highlight the recent federal investments in their watershed conservation efforts,” said Senator Blunt Rochester. “From the water control structures to the historic Allee House to birdwatching, it was remarkable to see firsthand the dedication of the staff there and the care they have for the beautiful environment around them. As a member of the Senate, I will continue to champion conservation efforts in Delaware and across the country and ensure wildlife refuges like Bombay Hook have the resources they need to conserve and restore our natural treasures for future generations.”

Established in 1937 for migratory birds, Bombay Hook encompasses over 16,000 acres of habitat including one of the largest remaining expanses of tidal salt marsh in the mid-Atlantic region. In addition to salt marsh, the refuge features freshwater impoundments originally constructed by an all-Black unit of the Civilian Conservation Corps, forested wetlands, open meadows, and uplands to provide for migratory birds and other wildlife in the Atlantic flyway, as well as recreational opportunities for the public.
