Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) released the following statement after the release of President Donald Trump’s budget proposal:
“Today, following 100 days of chaos, confusion, and uncertainty, the President has announced a budget that not only further demonstrates his desire to make government more inefficient, but also lays out a vision that would cut health care, housing, education, and energy programs American families rely on to make ends meet.
“At a time when the avian flu and measles outbreaks are on the rise, this budget suggests we should cut back on health care funding at the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control by nearly half. America’s students are America’s future, and while students struggle to get the resources they need, the President’s budget would continue dismantling the Department of Education and cut funding schools use to support vulnerable students. Republicans in Congress are already attempting to cut Medicaid and food assistance, but this budget takes it a step further by targeting desperately needed rental assistance for millions of renters while we struggle with a housing affordability and supply crisis.
“The President’s ‘new age’ for America is not one of hope and prosperity. It is the age of Americans’ health care being ripped away, students being left behind, a worsening housing crisis, and an economy at an all-time low. I’m going to do whatever I can to fight back against this harmful budget proposal in Congress.”
