Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) today released a statement ahead of the Senate’s vote on a War Powers Resolution, introduced by Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.), to disapprove of the recent military action against Iran:
“Today, I will vote for Senator Kaine’s war powers resolution.
“What we have seen from this President is a dangerous pattern. From the moment he was sworn in, he has worked to undermine Congress’s constitutional authority, hollow out our federal government, and launch illegal military operations in countries around the world. Americans were promised peace. Instead, we are witnessing chaos.
“The Iranian regime is a deadly one, and there is no doubt that the world would be a safer place without Iran having nuclear capabilities. But after attending the Senate briefing on Iran, it was strikingly clear that there was no rational justification for military action and no imminent threat to the United States. This administration has failed to define its goals, explain an exit strategy, or provide any long-term plan for what comes next.
“Countless Americans remember Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. They remember the cost of wars that were launched without clear objectives. They remember the sons and daughters who never came home, and the scars of those who did. This vote today is a vote for the American people, who have said loud and clear that they do not want another forever war.”
