Washington, D.C. – This week, U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) joined MSNBC’s PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton to discuss how the President escalated tensions in Los Angeles and his executive overreach. Below are excerpts and here is a link to the interview.
On The L.A. Protests and the President’s Rhetoric
“This is no way to be a leader of a country. Mayor Karen Bass in California, the governor, Gavin Newsom, have been making sure that they have law and order. And this president is instead creating what he does: more chaos.”
“It’s part of a bigger picture of him thinking that there aren’t three branches of government, this administration not recognizing that we do have a Constitution…We as members of Congress also have a responsibility of oversight…He’s creating and sowing confusion at a time when we need to have peace and let people to exercise their rights to protest and demonstrate, as we have historically done…From my seat in the Senate, [I] recognize that we still have a government [that] has three [coequal] branches and that we have to do our work to make sure that this president does not go unchecked…”
On The President’s use of Title 10
“It’s executive overreach, bottom line… [Congress does] have a role, and we’ll hold him accountable.”
