Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. CASA, Inc. which effectively limits the power of federal courts to issue nationwide injunctions:
“This decision by the Supreme Court today will further constrain the ability of our nation’s courts to serve as a check on the executive branch. In a moment when the President is willfully putting his political goals above the Constitution, this decision is a blow to our democratic values.
“While the Court did not rule on the constitutionality of the president’s executive order on birthright citizenship – which is clearly protected by the 14th Amendment – this ruling limits the ability of Americans to stand up for themselves if an even-more-emboldened executive branch violates their rights.
“Many Americans are frightened by what this means for the future of our democracy, and they are right to be concerned. I will continue to work with my Democratic colleagues to ensure every American can exercise their hard-fought rights and freedoms.”
