Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood which would allow states to prevent Medicaid coverage for care provided at Planned Parenthood clinics:
“The Supreme Court’s ruling today is another assault on women’s rights and reproductive freedoms. Just this week, we marked three years since the disastrous Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which opened the floodgates on abortion bans and cuts to reproductive health services. This ruling strips access to critical care for people and is yet another example of what is at stake as Republicans continue to push their agenda.
“Planned Parenthood patients rely on Medicaid to cover reproductive care, as well as STD treatment and testing, and cancer screenings. This decision by the Supreme Court sets the stage for other states to exclude Planned Parenthood from their Medicaid programs, depriving millions of women of health care access.
“As we approach consideration of Senate Republicans’ budget bill – which has attempted to slash Medicaid funding for millions of Americans – Democrats will continue to not only fight back against their attacks on women’s reproductive health care, but be ready to reclaim our reproductive freedom.”
