Washington, D.C. – Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) released the following statement today:

“For almost 40 years, our nation has celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day—a day to reflect on his profound legacy and the pursuit of justice, equality, and the ongoing work of our democracy. Dr. King’s vision of a ‘beloved community” and his reminder that ‘darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that’ continue to inspire us.

“This morning, I join millions across the country in honoring Dr. King and witnessing a hallmark of our democratic government, which began with George Washington: the peaceful transition of power from one American president to another. Representing the one million people of Delaware, serving our Constitution, and defending our democracy embody the hope and light Dr. King spoke of, especially during our darkest moments.

“As President Biden’s transformational presidency comes to a close, over the next four years, I intend to hold this administration accountable to the ideals of our Constitution and the dream of Dr. King while working with Democrats and Republicans on issues that impact Delawareans and prioritize the urgent needs of our people.

“Today, I am thinking of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy as we enter this next chapter as a nation. As we commemorate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., let’s reflect on his legacy and commit ourselves to using our power to create an equitable future and continue the pursuit of a more beloved community.”
